Is there evidence that acupuncture works?

The World Health Organisation recognises acupuncture as effective with a range of conditions in people [see: ACUPUNCTURE]. In recent years there has been research into its effectiveness with animals.

Some examples of studies:

  • 90% of cases of laminitis improved (Kilde and Kung)
  • 87% of cases with chronic back pain preventing their use in competition were able to resume work (Kilde and Martin)
  • 96% of cases with acute lameness improved, with 50% achieving soundness (Xie).
  • 70% of arthritic dogs no longer responding to pain medication showed more than 50% improvement in mobility and gait (Schoen)
