What will my horse feel during acupuncture?

Because the needles used are so fine (0.2mm to 0.3mm), acupuncture is rarely painful. The sensations felt by people receiving acupuncture are often described as tingling, warmth and heaviness.

Most people report feeling a state of relaxation during acupuncture, and this is partly due to the release of endorphins triggered by acupuncture. Horses generally relax during a session as well, and often almost go to sleep while the needles are in place.

If a horse is averse to acupuncture, the acu-points can be stimulated using other techniques, e.g. low-level laser / photonic therapy or moxibustion.
