How does shiatsu work?

According to oriental philosophy, the body has meridians or channels with energy (Ki in Japanese) flowing through them. This Ki is constantly changing, and affects the individual’s physical, mental and emotional states. In oriental medicine, good health is seen as reliant on unobstructed flow of this energy to all muscles, internal organs and body tissues.

When a body is under stress, blockages in this energy can occur along one or more channels, and this can result in discomfort or pain. Blockages that are not resolved can manifest as various physical symptoms or ailments, depending on the channels affected.

These channels tend to follow the horse’s muscle contours, with tsubos or acupuncture points lying along the channels, often near joints, nerves or major arteries.
